Every day...
you just gotta touch a rock. So today I got up and went out with the coffee and fixed what fell in the home garden. I know that you will never be happy wanting them to stay up al the time, and I'm getting excited about going out and doing something new when one falls.
Then when I got to work I had a break and went out and balanced some rocks around the lot. It was nice. It's late. More later...

Another Stoney Evening...
is an album (CD if you're under thirty) by David Crosby and Graham Nash. You should run out and pay retail for it right now. David and Graham, don't sue me for using your title. I love you guys.
I have just breezed through the blog after spending six hours putting it up yesterday, and decided that future entries will just have a short intro as to the day and place, and spare you the commentary unless necessary. I am new to this and am a little excitable, so sorry if it gets a little weird on you. Anyway, have fun, and really, David and Graham, don't sue.

Take Me To The River...
I didn't have work or any interviews today, so I went in search of rocks. Went "Way Down Upon The Deep Old Man Mighty Chattahoochee"--just like in that song. I thought the river would be a veritable smorgasbord of smooth, stackable beauties--and rocks. As it turned out the river was really high and I had to scrounge around the banks for whatever I could get. It was still a blast, though, and the learning continued with a vengence.
The first of the day on the river. It fell about ten seconds after I snapped this as a huge wind came up.
Had fun with these guys. They didn't last too long. Well, the middle one did. You'll see more in a minute.
Some fishermen brought their boat in for a closer look as I put the last one in place (second from left). They applauded when I got it to finally stand. Here's one view...
My first stab at a dependent balance, just a little one, though. I do love that bottom cube of quartzite. It's a real beauty--glows in the sun when it's right. Dave says that every rock thinks he's a "face," and this one is for sure. I think I'll try to go back and get that one for the home collection.
Can't Get Enough...
After the river I came home and reworked the garden some. I put up three new ones, then tried to mess with an existing, which tumbled and knocked over another, so I got to rebuild two of them.
This is my favorite of the day at home. Dave calls this a dependent balance, because the middle rock (in this case) depends upon the two above it to balance. Tricky but fun. I look forward to doing more of this kind of thing.
Rocks On The Brain...
On Tuesday night I picked up few rocks from work and brought them home. It had been freezing the last couple of days with high winds, but the stacks fared pretty well, mostly. Did these newbies before work. I knew I was bad off because I met LeAnn Rimes (superhot) the night before, and all I could think of was the rocks in my trunk. I got it bad.
Don't Send Rocks Through the Mail...
Ravin' Dave came to town on the fifteenth to see the Falcons' game and brought me an awesome collection of rocks to play with. Some were from South Carolina and some from Georgia. He went to a lot of trouble. I wanted to skip work and stack 'em, but I held out till Sunday and then got busy. Here's what happened...
This is how the day ended. Slight differences in the guy in front, and big changes in the guy in back.
The Bug Had Me...
So I scrounged a couple of rocks out of the back yard and moved them up to the front and went to work. There were only a few rocks to be scrounged that weren't already part of some landscaping endeavor, so I started light. I did like the balances, though. This was on January 4, 2005.
In The Beginning...
This was done December 22, 2004 on a ridge overlooking Palm Springs, CA. You never forget the first time.
This is me with my first stack, whick I did in honor of Dave Russell. I had intended to go to the point and do some drawing, but this one piece of quartz called my name, and then another, and then...
after a few stern lessons from Dame Gravity, there it was.
And It Stoned Me To My Soul...
So here's the new blog, and lots of pictures (more than some folks care for) of rock stacks. My first one was on a point in Palm Springs, CA, overlooking the city in December of 2004. My last was this afternoon in the front yard. I've gotten hooked on this art, and I find myself thinking about it more than eating or looking for a job. Anyway, enough of words, photos speak louder than, photos now...
